Coffee Anatomy was reconfigured from an existing café into a production-focused hospitality space servicing both the Harry Perkins Institute and three nearby tenancies within the QEII Medical Campus.
The project required the kitchen to operate across multiple scales simultaneously - supporting catering production, delivery logistics, collection points, and a high-volume daily service, while maintaining the existing seating capacity within a relatively compact footprint.
The front-of-house was shaped around two distinct rhythms of use: quick, efficient movement for hospital staff passing through between shifts, and slower, more social occupation for researchers, clinicians, and administrative staff seeking pause from the surrounding clinical environment.
Having taken ownership of the café six months prior to renovation, the client had developed a strong understanding of both operational challenges and everyday patterns of use. Early site visits and observation revealed that most patrons visited in pairs or small groups, influencing the planning approach, seating arrangements, and overall pacing of the space.
